In the lead up to the 2011 Foreshore Sound Search competition, we had a chat to Mitch from Skin & Bones, about what it was like to win and have the chance play at Foreshore.
How long have Skin & Bones been around for?
Jared and I have been playing music together for about 2-3 years now. We started Skin & Bones as a project in early 2010 when we realised we needed a name if we were going to produce our own music.
What kind of music do you play?
We try not to pigeon-hole ourselves too much, but the music we enjoy playing the most is definitely bass heavy music. We have been playing a fair few dubstep gigs recently and we are having loads of fun with it.
Why did you guys enter the Foreshore Sound Search last year?
It was the best opportunity we had seen for DJ's who were struggling to break into the Canberra dance scene. Not just the opportunity to play at Canberra's biggest dance music festival, but the publicity that came with the competition really appealed to us. With Raw FM involved we got a lot of free promotions too.
What was it like playing at the finals, knowing your preforming in front of a panel of judges?
I think we both brought a spare pair of underwear - as it was also our first time playing on academy's main stage AND it was by far the largest crowd we had played to at the time. We washed a fair bit of that nervousness away with stiff drinks before we got up to play though haha.
Did you guys expect to win?
No way! We were confident in our set, but we had no idea what the other DJ's were going to bring to the table. I guess we were lucky in the end to be rostered on to play last. Which allowed us to see what we were up against, and try to top their performances.
Any good backstage stories?
No stories, but a piece of advice: Stay away from Peking Duk unless you want to get very, very drunk.
What’s next for Skin and Bones?
We are working on putting together our first EP at the moment. So locking ourselves in the studio and trying not to get distracted. Supporting some big names this month at Academy and Trinity Bar, which we are really looking forward to and prepping for our second Foreshore appearance.
